Allahumma sayyiban nafi'a

O Allah, [let it be] a beneficial rain cloud.

Dua for Excessive Rain to Stop

Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna. Allahumma 'alal-akami waz-zirab, wa butunil-awdiyah, wa manabitish-shajar

O Allah, [let it fall] around us and not upon us. O Allah, upon the hills, the plateaus, the beds of valleys, and the places where trees grow.

Said when rainfall becomes excessive and causes harm, asking for it to move to surrounding areas instead.

Sahih al-Bukhari / Sahih Muslim, Bukhari No. 1014 — Anas ibn Malik (RA)

Dua After It Has Rained

Mutirna bifadlillahi wa rahmatih

We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allah.

Said after rainfall, acknowledging it as a mercy and provision from Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari / Sahih Muslim, Bukhari No. 846 — Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani (RA)

Dua Upon Hearing Thunder

Subhanal-ladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatih

Glory be to the One whom thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels out of fear of Him.

Said when thunder is heard, glorifying Allah who thunder itself glorifies.

Muwatta Malik, No. 1798 — 'Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (RA)

Dua Upon Seeing Lightning

Subhanal-ladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatih

Glory be to the One whom thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels out of fear of Him.

The same glorification of Allah said upon hearing thunder is also recited upon seeing lightning flash across the sky, as both are among Allah's signs in the heavens.

Muwatta Malik, No. 1798 — 'Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (RA)

Dua for a Strong Wind

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma fiha wa khayra ma ursilat bih, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma fiha wa sharri ma ursilat bih

O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good within it, and the good it was sent with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil it was sent with.

Said when a strong wind blows, asking for its good and seeking refuge from its harm.

Sahih Muslim, No. 899 — 'Aishah (RA)

Dua for Sighting the New Moon

Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu Rabbana wa tarda. Rabbuna wa Rabbukallah

Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, bring this crescent upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, and success in that which You love and are pleased with, our Lord. Our Lord and yours [O moon] is Allah.

Said upon seeing the crescent of a new lunar month.

Sunan al-Tirmidhi, No. 3451 — Talhah ibn 'Ubaydillah (RA)

Response to a Solar or Lunar Eclipse

The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone. So when you see that, call upon Allah, say Takbir, pray, and give charity.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that eclipses are signs of Allah, not caused by anyone's death or birth; upon seeing one, hasten to remembrance, prayer (Salat al-Kusuf), charity, and supplication.

Sahih al-Bukhari / Sahih Muslim, Bukhari No. 1044 — al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (RA)
