صلاة الجنازة
Namaz-e-Janaza — Funeral Prayer
The funeral prayer step by step, with the dua for each takbir.
Namaz-e-Janaza — the funeral prayer
Performed standing, with no bowing or prostration, in four takbirs. It is prayed collectively as a duty upon the community (fard kifayah).
First Takbir
Raise the hands and say "Allahu Akbar," then recite Surah Al-Fatiha silently (without an opening dua in most schools of thought).
Second Takbir
Say "Allahu Akbar" again, then recite Durood Ibrahim — the same blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited in the tashahhud of daily prayer.
Third Takbir — Dua for the deceased
Allahumma-ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina…
O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, let them live upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die, let them die upon faith.
Fourth Takbir & Salam
Say "Allahu Akbar" a fourth time, pause briefly in silence (some add a short closing dua), then finish by turning the head right and left saying "As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah," just as in the daily prayers.
